On June 25, 2024, an open session of the scientific seminar of the Laboratory for the Study and Preservation of Minority Languages at the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) was held. Maria Emiliya Aleksandrovna Winkler and Anastasia Pavlovna Yevstigneyeva (Scientific Center for the Preservation, Revival, and Documentation of Languages of Russia, Institute of Linguistics, RAS) presented on "The Project for Documenting the Mitagi-Dzhalganski and Azerbaijani Languages: Initial Observations."
Abstract. The report will focus on two languages spoken in the Derbent district of the Republic of Dagestan: Azerbaijani (< Turkic) and Mitagi-Dzhalganski (< Tati subgroup < southwestern branch of Iranian languages).
On the one hand, a number of sociolinguistic topics will be addressed, including the current state of the languages, the linguistic ideologies of the speakers, and their self-identification.
On the other hand, the presentation will examine specific linguistic phenomena and features of the languages being studied, related both to dialectal variation and language contact.
